"Make an ornament to take home and one to hang on the community tree!" That line from the Village of North Aurora's Making Spirits Bright page describes the Santa's Workshop Craft Corner, and it holds for most of the evening. On Saturday, Dec. 5, 2026, North Aurora Riverfront Park at 25 East State Street lights up for the season. Local businesses and community groups sponsor the trees in the grove. The parade vehicles come from local businesses and community groups too. Families build the gingerbread houses that get voted on the next day.
Each of those pieces has its own November deadline or sign-up window. Here is the order they come in.
The Tree Grove Opened for Sponsors This Week
The village opened 2026 tree sponsorships on Nov. 3. Those trees make up the Sponsor Tree Grove, one of the stations open from 5 to 7 p.m. at the park on Dec. 5, which the village describes as trees "sponsored by our community." Sponsorship details are on the Making Spirits Bright page.
The park's lights stay up longer than the event itself. Riverfront Park gets lit for the first time this season at about 5:15 p.m. on Dec. 5, and the village says the lights will stay up through the new year.
The Parade Is Made of Local Vehicles
The Holiday Light Parade starts at 5 p.m. and runs from the North Aurora Police Department down Route 31 to Riverfront Park. It's a lighted vehicle parade, and the entries come from North Aurora community groups and businesses. Taking part is free. The village's rules are short:
- It is a driving parade only. No one is allowed in the roadway outside their vehicle.
- Floats are welcome but must be included in the original vehicle registration.
- No giveaways of any kind, including candy, food, promotional items or flyers.
- Every vehicle needs a holiday decoration theme, such as Santa Claus, a winter wonderland, snowflakes or reindeer. Business names and logos are encouraged as long as the vehicle still fits the theme.
- Vehicles can start arriving at the Police Department at 3 p.m. and must be there by 4 p.m. for staging.
The Mayor picks one entry as the Best Holiday Spirit Vehicle. The winner gets a $50 Target gift card and gets to park the vehicle at Riverfront Park for the evening. The parade has no candy or flyers, so its appeal on Route 31 is the lights themselves. The vehicle application is on the village's event page.
November's Other Sign-Ups and Drop-Offs
The parade and the grove are the biggest November commitments. Three smaller projects also start this month and end up somewhere public in December.
Gingerbread House 2026 Challenge. Messenger Public Library will have rules and entry forms at every service desk starting Nov. 9. Finished houses go to the library from Nov. 21 through Dec. 4. You can enter as a family team or on your own, and public voting and awards happen at the library's Holiday Open House on Dec. 6.
DIY Winter Holiday Vase class. The village's Beautification Committee is running this class on Saturday, Nov. 21, from 10 a.m. to noon at the Public Works Facility, 312 Butterfield Road. It costs $10, and you need to register in advance. The class is the same Saturday the gingerbread drop-off opens.
Kindness Hats. From Nov. 1 through Dec. 30, Messenger Public Library has knitting and crochet kits to pick up, or you can use your own supplies. The finished hats go to local charities.
Here is how November lays out, including the civic and family programs on the same weekends:
| Date | What | Where |
|---|---|---|
| Ongoing since Nov. 3 | Sponsor Tree Grove sponsorships open | Village of North Aurora |
| Fri., Nov. 6 | Book Buddies, ages 2–5, 10–10:30 a.m. | Red Oak Nature Center, 930 N. River Road |
| Mon., Nov. 9 | Gingerbread rules and entry forms available | Messenger Public Library service desks |
| Wed., Nov. 11 | Veterans Day Ceremony, 11 a.m. | Veterans Memorial, Willow Way and Farview Drive |
| Sat., Nov. 14 | Hibernation PJ Party, ages 7–11, 6:30–9 p.m. | Red Oak Nature Center |
| Fri., Nov. 20 | Book Buddies, 10–10:30 a.m. | Red Oak Nature Center |
| Sat., Nov. 21 | DIY Winter Holiday Vase class, 10 a.m.–noon | Public Works Facility, 312 Butterfield Road |

The village organizes the Veterans Day Ceremony, and the program includes a flag-retirement ceremony. The Hibernation PJ Party is a Fox Valley Park District evening with cocoa, games, activities and an animal meet-and-greet. Red Oak Nature Center's events page lists it with the Book Buddies sessions.
Dec. 5, From Staging to Santa
By the first Saturday in December, all of that November work comes together in one evening at the river. Here is the timeline from the village:
- 3–4 p.m.: Parade vehicles stage at the North Aurora Police Department.
- 5 p.m.: The Holiday Light Parade leaves the Police Department and heads down Route 31.
- 5–7 p.m.: Live reindeer to meet and pet, live ice-sculpture demonstrations, the Santa's Workshop Craft Corner, the Sponsor Tree Grove and a holiday food drive for the Aurora Area Interfaith Food Pantry.
- About 5:15 p.m.: Riverfront Park lights up for the first time this season.
- About 5:15–7 p.m.: A scavenger hunt for hidden penguins, with a prize for finding them all.
- 6–7 p.m.: Meet Santa.
The food drive makes this a good evening to bring a bag of nonperishables, since the collection runs the whole two hours. The ornament from the craft corner adds one more piece to the park that night, because one of the two you make goes on the community tree.
Everything wraps up at 7 p.m., so dinner is easy to plan around it. Harner's Bakery & Restaurant is at 10 W. State St., a short walk down State Street from the park. For pizza after the lights, Little Pops NY Pizzeria at 1033 Kilbery Lane opened in North Aurora this year and stays open until 11 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays, according to the village's business feature.
On Sunday, the Gingerbread Gets Judged
The weekend continues the next day at Messenger Public Library, 113 Oak Street. Its Holiday Open House on Sunday, Dec. 6, is where the public votes on the gingerbread houses and the awards are handed out. Entries made in November kitchens are judged in the same weekend the park lights go on.
For a coffee on the way, Krema Coffee is at 1109 Ritter St.
The season keeps going after the opening weekend. On Saturday, Dec. 12, from 10 to 11 a.m., Red Oak Nature Center hosts its Holiday Party for the Animals. Visitors make decorations and enrichment-style treats for the center's animal ambassadors. Book Buddies runs again on Dec. 4 and Dec. 18. The lights at Riverfront Park stay up through the new year.
At Holzl Homes, we pay attention to the community calendars that shape the season for our neighbors, and Making Spirits Bright is one of North Aurora's busiest weekends. If you're a homeowner wondering how your home's value compares this season, request your free home valuation and we'll put together a clear, data-backed picture for you before the parade comes down Route 31.
